The spectrum of microdisk lasers

چکیده
A model for quantitative analysis of microdisk laser emission spectra is presented. Conformal mapping is used to determine radial and azimuthal eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and cavity Q corresponding to leaky optical resonances in an optically transparent dielectric disk. The effects of gain and loss in a microcavity active medium are also included in the model. Our results compare well with experimental data obtained from an InGaAs/InGaAsP quantum well microdisk laser of radius R50.8 mm. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~96!02514-5#

Resonant modes and laser spectrum of microdisk lasers
New semiconductor microdisk and microcylinder resonant cavities have been studied with measured lasing emission wavelength at l51550 nm, l5980 nm, and l5510 nm. Position in a cylinder is specified by natural axial coordinate z, radial coordinate r, and azimuthal angle u. Isolated short cylinders are disks of thickness L. The design and optimization of a semiconductor microdisk laser is critical...
متن کاملScaled Microdisk Lasers a Doctoral Dissertation
Microdisk lasers, based on whispering gallery optical resonances, have recently attracted considerable attention. The interest in microdisk lasers is driven by, amongst other factors, their potential for low-threshold power, ease of fabrication and in-plane emission characteristics. However, there are a few key challenges that need to be overcome for these devices to become practical, chief amo...

We demonstrate that quantum dot microdisk lasers are able to operate under continuous wave current injection at 100 o C. We also present a novel method for increasing a side mode suppression ratio in microdisk lasers.
متن کاملDynamic Behavior of Scaled Microdisk Lasers
Room-temperature small-signal intensity-modulation frequency response of InGaAs/InGaAsP multiple quantum well microdisk lasers depends on disk radius. For frequencies up to 2 GHz the measured response of a small radius microdisk laser is closer to an ideal laser compared to larger devices. The dynamic response of larger radius lasers is strongly in¯uenced by the presence of a reservoir of carri...

We have utilized hybrid zinc oxide/silica microdisk lasers to sense volatile organic compounds, such as toluene and nitrobenzene. Nonspecific adsorption of these organic molecules onto the microdisk surface causes an increase in the disk refractive index, ultimately resulting in a redshift of the observed lasing wavelengths. The monitoring of these shifts provides the sensing modality. Microdis...
